Nevada Court System & Jurisdictions

California operates a unified Superior Court system — one court per county. In Nevada County, this role is fulfilled by the Nevada County Superior Court, which has been administered by the state since the late 1990s. The court handles all categories of cases at the local level.

  • Criminal Cases — felonies, misdemeanors, probation violations.
  • Civil Cases — unlimited jurisdiction claims (over $25,000), as well as limited jurisdiction cases ($25,000 and under).
  • Small Claims — claims up to $12,500 (or up to $6,250 for legal entities). Attorneys typically do not participate.
  • Family Law — divorce, child custody, alimony, protective orders.
  • Probate — estate management, guardianship, conservatorship.
  • Traffic — traffic violations and infractions.
  • Juvenile Cases — cases involving minors (access is strictly limited).

Federal cases concerning the territory of Nevada County are handled by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California — this is a separate system with its own PACER portal.

How to Get a Copy of a Nevada Court Document

Documents stored in court cases are considered public records according to the California Rules of Court. Exceptions apply to sealed cases, juvenile records, certain family cases, and confidential documents. The court adheres to rule 2.501 of the California Rules of Court regarding electronic access.

Ways to obtain copies:

  • Online — through the Case Records & Requests portal, you can search for cases and view documents. Case parties have extended access to electronic files.
  • In person — visit the Clerk's Office in Nevada City. Bring the case number or sufficient identification data for the search.
  • By mail — send a written request specifying the case number, party names, document type, and payment.

Certified vs. non-certified copies: A certified copy bears the court seal and clerk's signature — it is required for legal actions (filing in another court, confirming a judgment, etc.). A non-certified copy is suitable for review.
